What to Wear for In-Home Newborn Photos | Marietta Newborn Photographer

Keep It Simple, Comfortable, and Real

When parents start planning their in-home newborn session, one of the first questions they ask is, “What should we wear?” And it makes sense. You’re newly postpartum, running on very little sleep, and the idea of coordinating outfits can feel overwhelming.

The good news is this: in-home newborn photos are meant to feel relaxed, natural, and lived in. What you wear should support that feeling, not compete with it.

As a Marietta in-home newborn photographer, my approach to styling is rooted in comfort, softness, and timeless choices that allow your connection to shine.

Neutrals Always Photograph Beautifully

Soft neutral tones photograph best in natural light. Creams, whites, beiges, soft browns, muted grays, and gentle earth tones work beautifully in home environments and pair well with nearly any space.

Neutrals also keep the focus on your baby and your connection rather than drawing attention to patterns or bright colors. When in doubt, simpler is always better.

Neutrals also help naturally reflect the light in your home which is so important to the beauty of your images.

Comfort Matters More Than You Think

Postpartum bodies deserve comfort and kindness. Choose pieces you can move in easily and feel confident wearing. Loose tops, soft fabrics, and layers photograph far better than anything stiff or tight.

Bare feet are always welcome. Socks are optional. The goal is to feel at home, because you are.

What About Baby?

For newborns, less is more. A simple neutral onesie with feet showing (for those sweet toe shots), a soft swaddle, or even just a diaper wrapped in a blanket is often all that’s needed. These choices keep the images timeless and allow tiny details like fingers, toes, and sleepy expressions to stand out.

Avoid logos, busy patterns, or bright colors for baby. Soft textures and neutral tones will always age beautifully.

Coordinating Without Matching

Families don’t need to match exactly. Instead, aim to coordinate. Choose a color palette and let each family member wear something within that range. This creates harmony without looking overly styled.

In-home newborn sessions are about connection, not perfection. A little variation adds warmth and authenticity to your gallery.

Styling Support Makes It Easier

If the thought of styling still feels stressful, you don’t have to do it alone. I guide families through outfit choices and help them pull together looks that feel natural and cohesive. Whether that’s through styling guidance or selecting pieces from my client closet when available, the goal is always to make the experience easier for you.

Images That Feel Like Home

Your in-home newborn photos will one day remind you of more than just how your baby looked. They’ll remind you of how this season felt. What you wore should support that memory, not distract from it.

Soft, comfortable, and timeless choices help create images that feel honest and deeply personal.

As a Marietta in-home newborn photographer, I believe your newborn session should feel calm, supportive, and true to your life right now.
