The Question Every Expecting Mom Asks

One of the most common questions I hear from expecting moms is, “When should I book my maternity session?” And it’s a good question. Pregnancy moves fast, energy shifts week to week, and it can be hard to know when the timing feels right.
The short answer? Earlier than you think.
As a Marietta maternity photographer, I’ve seen over and over again how booking early creates a more relaxed, intentional experience and better photos to match.
The Ideal Window for Maternity Photos

The sweet spot for maternity sessions is typically between 28 and 34 weeks. During this time, your bump is beautifully rounded, you’re usually still comfortable moving and standing, swelling and fatigue are often more manageable, and you’re not yet in that “any day now” mental space.
This window allows us to document your pregnancy while you still feel present and connected to the experience rather than simply trying to get through the day.
Why Booking Earlier Makes Everything Easier

When moms wait too long to book, sessions can start to feel rushed or stressful. Booking earlier gives us space to slow things down.
Early booking allows time for thoughtful planning and location selection, styling support and wardrobe guidance, flexibility with dates in case weather shifts, and a calmer mindset going into the session.
Instead of scrambling to fit maternity photos in at the last minute, you get to enjoy the process.
What If You’re Already Past 34 Weeks?

If you’re reading this and thinking you’ve missed the window, take a deep breath. Beautiful maternity photos can still happen later in pregnancy. I photograph many moms closer to their due dates, and those sessions often carry a deep emotional weight.
The key is to communicate how you’re feeling so we can plan accordingly, choosing locations, timing, and pacing that support your comfort.
Your Maternity Session Is About More Than Timing

While timing matters, it’s not the most important part. What matters most is documenting this season before it becomes a memory.
This is the version of you that carried your baby.
This is the body that grew new life.
This is the waiting, the anticipation, the quiet in-between.
Maternity photos are not about perfection. They’re about presence.
